By a small quartz specirograph provided with a movable slit in its focal plane, this spectral line is isolated and its intensity is measured by a photoelectric Geiger counter tube with counting rate meter. The sensitivity of the apparatus in normal operation is limited to about 0.60mg lead per m3 air, by the fluctuations of the background intensity emitted by the spark. Although this is more than the maximum permissible concentration of lead 1857: A. Bierman: A new type of betatron without an iron yoke (Nature London 163, 649, 1949, April 23). A new type of betatron is described in which the magnetic field, is obtained by .means 'of coils in air, through. which the discharge current of a 6.5 (LF condenser battery passes. There is only a small iron core, by means of which it is easy to fulfil the "flux condition". Saturation of the core . The betatron as a whol~ weighs no more than 50 kg, the iron core itself weighing less than 5 kg. The peak value of the magnetic induction is 0.4 Wh/m2 (4,000 gauss), the radius of the orbit 8 cm; the energy of the accelerated electrons amounts to 9 MeV. Cf. Philips Techn. The silver activation counters are commonly used for pulsed-neutron yield measurements especially in plasma focus devices. The counter normally consists of a Geiger-Muller tube along with silver foils and polyethylene (as a moderator), which is calibrated against an Am-Be radioisotope neutron source. The neutrons, after being slowed-down in the polyethylene, activate the silver foils. By measur...

Localization of intestinal bleeding using a miniature Geiger counter.

This study reports the practical problems involved in the use of a miniature Geiger counter to detect the site of bleeding into the intestine. The observations so far have been made in dogs but its possible application in man is proposed.

An improved Geiger-counter arrangement for determination of radium content.

Geiger-counter apparatus in which several counters may be placed in any position relative to each other is described. A circular arrangement of counters to give a counting rate approximately independent of the position of a so urce near the center of the circle is discussed. The relation of the I osition of the source to the counting rate of a single Geiger counter is discus ed. A method of cal...

The Erythrocyte Ghost Is a Perfect Osmometer

The osmotic swelling of intact erythrocytes in hypotonic solutions was measured using microhematocrit tubes, Van Allen tubes, and a calibrated Coulter counter. In agreement with earlier workers the intact cells did not behave as perfect osmometers, the cells swelling less than predicted by the Boyle-van't Hoff law. Erythrocyte ghosts were prepared from fresh intact erythrocytes by one-step hemo...

The use of the Geiger - Miiller counter X - ray spectrometer in an X - ray laboratory , with special reference to automatic recording

The advantages and limitations of Geiger counter techniques in a laboratory applying X-ray methods to a variety of problems are discussed and some simple examples are described. These illustrate the convenience of its use in obtaining semi-quantitative results very rapidly and in following the effects of various treatments. The accuracy of the method is considered in relation to the statistical...
